I love to read everybody's guessing on an answer. Nobody knows but is more than willing to through out a guess. But everybody should remember every bird of any size that goes after a chicken is not a hawk.

Sounds like crows. I had the same thig happening ,they swoop down and attack in mass. I started putting out peanut(in the shells) the crows love them.
Just throw them out on the groud away from your chicks and see if that doesn't help.
