he is grabbing hold of their necks.and they scream something awful.i do know i have three more cockerel's in with him and I'm pretty sure that the rest are pullets.they were all hatched out from the same clutch.he runs around squawking.they all scatter.i do plan on re homing him.but in the mean time should i separate him from the rest of the flock.

I went through something similar. One of my hens turned out to be a rooster (sucker fooled me for a long time). One day he started doing what you describe. Pulling neck feathers, savage pecking, horrible beat down causing open wounds.

So yes, I did separate him,

I could not see leaving him with the rest of the hens to terrorize them, when he was going to be rehomed. The little devil spend 3 days by himself in a dog crate.

tried to put him back in the coop, and he went strait for a hen and attached her. He was some sort of Rhode Island Red mix. I hear The RIR roosters can be very aggressive.

Curious, what breed is your roo?

Good luck

That is par for a cockerel just learning. They mature faster then pullets. Usually no harm is done just a lot of squawking and a few feathers lost. I leave them together. It is up to you whether you can put up with tumult or need it quieter, and have the room to keep the cockerels separate.

I know I have at least another three roosters.why would I want to keep them.

thank you.i really care for the young roos.but Dh said he was not going to build anymore coops and runs.i feel sad to think whoever takes them will they be taken care of.
