I’m a new chicken owner and my 11 week old pullets have developed red faces and especially around the eyes. My Buff Orpington is the reddest. Is this because they are maturing or something more? I keep the coop and run really clean. I give fresh food and water daily. They have a dust bath and I’ve checked them for lice and mites but I don’t see any. I thought maybe it was theirs food because it happened a week after I changed their food. So I went back to the old food and it’s been almost a week and still they have red faces. Any suggestions will be welcome.

All is well. This is a normal part of maturation. I have an 11 week old flock of Silver Laced Wyandottes, and you can see the same red faces in this photo. Differnet breeds will have somewhat differnet characteristics. Now, if you look at them and detect any moving dots, then you could suspect mites. But if your girls are eating and drinking normally, and active, then you have nothing to worry about.

Thank you! I thought this might be the case but I just wasn’t sure. I didn’t mention in the original post but sometimes their faces get more red if it’s hot outside. Thanks again!
