I really, really love my Norwegian Jaerhons!
They have been very winter-hardy ~ and boy do we have mega winters in the high Rockies! I originally was interested in the breed because they are active, alert and able to fly, giving them good odds of getting away from predators. I free-range my laying flock in the woods surrounding my mountain home, this has indeed been a great plus for me.
The pale crele-type coloring is calming to look at. I never grow tired of their understated Scandinavian beauty. The look also gives them camoflauge in the bushes. They are a light-weight bird and not a heavy eater. Thriving very well on their foraging and the supplementary whole-grain diet I serve. They lay a nice-sized, creamy white, bulbous egg, sometimes hard to tell which end is the big end. Their eggs are perfect for my pasanke (Ukranian egg painting) in size, shape and color.
The flock has been an easy one to keep all around, mild-mannered with one another (including the roos) and they have blended in well with my bantam and larger breeds. They have been my best winter layers!
