I almost fell over. I just got back from the grocery store and normally just pass right on by the chicken section (since I have freezer full) but stopped to have a look. The stewing hens were priced at $12 a piece. WOW!!!!!!

Doesn't shock me... it's probably priced according to "specialty" items. Kind of how a 8-12 ounce silkie stew bird is prized for black meat and goes for about 12 bucks each.... that said, free ranged organic chicken is like 6-7 a LB!

Well, since the grocery stores don't raise the chickens... they have to make a profit too being the middle man.

I sell mine for $8.00 each... if a store would want to buy them... they would still be $8.00 each. So for the store to make profit... well you seen it... $12.00 each.

This is why if you don't buy your products from local farmers, be prepared to pay higher prices for fresh local foods at a store... or in this case... niche items such as a stewing hen.
