Mottled Black Javas are considered the second oldest chicken breed in America. They are very hard to come by and I believe they are still on the endangered chicken breed list. Javas are a friendly, cold hardy, egg laying and broody machines. The chicks are a soft yellow with a black saddle. The teenagers feather out a gorgeous black with tons of white mottled spots. As the mature, they are mostly black with white spots throughout. As the molt, through the years, more white mottling shows. Great, great birds for a back yard flock. They lay a brown smooth speckled egg.
