Hello. My chicks are 12 weeks old. 2 EE's and 3 BO's. I noticed today after coming home from church that one of the BO's sounds rather hoarse. It is extremely hot here right now - high's in the high 90's and heat indices in the 100's. My chicks are in an enclosed run/coop with plenty of ventilation, and even a shade awning I made to block any sun. I'm adding electrolytes and ice to the cooler daily with the chicken waterer so water stays clean - give frozen fruit and even a tub of cold water for cooling off. I thought at first she might have something stuck in her throat but can't find anything. I keep the coop and run fresh with new litter weekly (doing deep litter method), and chicks love to range for a couple hours each evening.

Any ideas on what else I should do? Other than her voice she seems otherwise healthy and behaving normally, but this has me a bit concerned. The chicks are starting to squawk more, but sometimes still sound "chirpy." Wondered if it's a part of her voice changing? Thanks for any help.

Here's a video link. Right after this when I picked her up to look in her throat again, she let out a normal squawk. So now I'm thoroughly confused.

I would watch her for more symptoms of a possible respiratory infection. Fungal infections from mold are also possible. Mucus plugs or foreign objects can cause abnormal sounds in the throat. Some worms can also affect the throat, so if she hasn't been wormed, it might be good to treat you flock with Valbazen 1/2 ml orally once and repeat in 10 days, or with SafeGuard liquid goat wormer 1 ml orally for 5 days in a row. Here is a good link to read about the common respiratory diseases such as MG, bronchitis, coryza, ILT, and aspergillosis:

Thank you. I also treated her with Vet Rx along with the rest of the flock, according to the directions. Hoping she's better in the morning. If not, I'll take the next step.

Update: No new symptoms at all and she is behaving normally. I think maybe it's just her voice changing. I'll still keep an eye on her, but I'm not as concerned as before.
