Please help! I have an existing flock of 4 hens and a rooster. On Saturday we added 6 , 12 week old pullets. I know we should not have done it this way, but we did integrate them. The little ones are mostly staying in the back of the coop, where they have their own food and water. All was well until this morning. One (or maybe more) has diarrea and seems lethargic & sick. Last night they all seemed fine. I can put her in "sick bay" Should I give her medicated feed? What else should I do? They came from a large farm where he buys all day old chicks from the hatchery.
I've had chickens for years but this is my first time adding new ones to an existing flock.
Thanks!!!
Jamie

Look up cocci, could be the problem. Kills chicks very fast. Purchase Corid(amprol) dosage for Corid powder is- 1/2 tsp per gallon of water, Corid liquid - 2 tsp per gallon of water. Treat all chickens,do not give vitamins during treatment, interferes with medication. Give vitamins after treatment. Make sure medicated water is the only water they drink.

Thank you!
Hope your chicks get better, I had the same thing happen to me after bringing home hatchery chicks a couple of yrs ago. at the time I didn't have a clue what was happening. I also introduced them to my flock. I lost quite a few of them . So now when I bring new ones in and they are going to be with my established flock I keep them in a pen separated for a day or to , from the stress of moving new place etc. I keep corrid on hand introduce them to my soil for short times after two days I put them on corrid before they get a severe outbreak to prevent losing them. once they have gotten thru it they are immune to that strain of cocci. . I am still researching different options to get this out of my soil now, but in the mean time any chicks or young ones are kept in the house away from all rest and off the soil etc. if they are going to be taken to any swaps or sold . It sucks cause I had no problem before those chicks . Medicated chick starter I also put them on but not at the same time if you are treating with corrid. good luck, if you bring in future chicks watch them as I have found this to happen everytime I put new birds on my soil .I am now making changes to avoid this happening. good luck.

Here is my new question: How much should a young chicken sleep? The guy we bought them from said they are 12 weeks, but they seem younger. I saw the "sick" one poop and it looks totally normal. What I said was diarrea really looks normal after doing some poop research. I looked into cocci, and it does NOT look like that. I'm mainly surprised by how much time they are spending cuddled up together in a nest box, but on the other hand the old ones are not letting them in the run much. They have their own food and water, I have 3 food and waters for the 11 birds and a coop of 8 x 12 and run of double that.
