Hi all,

I've found this forum immensely helpful, as we are just getting into raising chickens. So thank you for that!

We have a 12 week old speckled sussex and I'd love opinions on gender. His/her brother started crowing a week ago. This one has not, but looks similar in some ways.

I'm asking because I have a very nice lady who is interested in giving him a home with her flock (we cannot have roosters where we live), if he/she is a roo. Thanks much for your input!

For comparison's sake, here is a pic of my other sussex, at 11 weeks, which is when he started crowing. This bird and the bird I posted above are from the same hatch.

I do have pics of this cockerel at 7/8 weeks and younger, if folks are interested in seeing more pics of younger SS roos. I know from reading these forums that these birds are hard to sex. Thanks again for any input.

SS roo at 11 weeks old.

Your speckled sussex is a cockerel. Our speckled sussex pullet has a tiny comb that has no red in it, hardly any wattle development, and no green feathers at all. You have gorgeous roosters and I am glad you already have a nice person lined up to give him a new home!

Thank you so much--I'm bummed because I really wanted a speckled sussex, but knew I was taking my chances with straight run chicks. Perhaps we will try again sometime. They are nice, nice birds--I'm sorry to have to give them up.

Again, I really appreciate the input.

Wow! This is crazy! My SS 12 week old rooster looks exactly, and I mean EXACTLY like yours. His name is Lemon. I think they are both very handsome males.
