Hello, new to this, I have a 12 year old pilgrim goose, female. And noticed her a couple days ago dropping her left wing. I felt a oval shaped lump under her wing close to her body, about 2 inches round. Feels warm, I work at a veterinarian clinic and I'm taking her in tomorrow. I'm afraid she may have to have her wing removed, I know it has to hurt, as any one ever seen anything like this on any of your birds? I read about feather cyst, but I can not find any good images to compare to. I'm hoping that's all it is, she's still eating and acting her self she's a tuff goose. But has not started laying yet which bothers me. I've had her since she was 3 days old. I've been sick about this all week end.

Well it does sound like a local infection and probably an abccess. It may well have been have been a feather cyst that has since become infected.

I think the tell tale signs are the dropping of the wing and thats its warm, signifying infection. I would take heart that she's still eating and drinking. With prompt Vetinarian attention and antibiotics this may be quickly and sucessfully treated. At this stage I wouldnt think it necessary to amputate the wing.

Once shes recovered she may still go on to laying this year. Best of luck.

Thanks I'm hoping, of course this stuff happens on a weekend, can't find a veterinarian that specializes in water fowl around here.

I am really impressed that you have had your goose for 12 years. I'd love to see pics of her! I hope your vet will be able to help her. Please keep us posted.

She been a great pet to me. I use to take her to work and she'll ride in the vehicle with me. She even loved my dogs and they like her to. But now there gone and I feel bad for her hoping she doesn't get to lonely. All her siblings died and I took her and she made it through what ever they had. Been mine since. She's missing part of her top beak. Neighbors dog dug under both privacy fence we had she stuck her head under to get to it I guess and he grabbed her. Luckily it wasn't to far back. That was when she was two. But she adapted to it. Does just fine. I posted picture of her.

She is beautiful!! I have a friend who is an avian certified vet, specializing in waterfowl. He does phone consultations if your vet would like to call him.
