Okay...I went to Golo.com...through their registration process and put in my three cents about the whole topic. Below is my submission...

There is no reason why the family shouldn't be able to keep their chickens if they cared for properly. I live in a suburban area and my daughter derives an immense amount of pleasure from our chickens, as do I. We have no television or computer games in our house. Most children these days are so far removed from roots that they have no idea where the food comes from, the economic impact of their food choices as well as the benefits of having animals that do produce food. Are they aware of the factory farmed chickens where thousands of chicken live in cages where they can't even spread their wings or are in squalor and the carcasses are not even removed? Do they know that in the places where they buy their chickens (unless they're organically raised) that the ammonia levels are so high so the people who work there use respirators and hightail it out of the buildings for their own health? That the term "cage-free" just means that the chickens legally only need one hour a day of access to the outdoors where they can go onto gravel? Do they realize that male chicks since they are less valuable are fed ALIVE into a grinder and that all of the sweepings on the floor are then fed back to the chickens? Artificial fertilizers are destroying our waterways and chicken fertilizer is one of the safest ways to go. They don't have to smell if they are properly maintained. With the rising prices of fuel, most families will not be able to eat meat or poultry as often, never mind eggs. Did you know that the eggs that you get from the supermarket can be up to four to five weeks old? To those who say, "Well, the family should have known the rules when they moved to the neighborhood" in my last residence I asked both the owner and the buyers broker whether poultry were allowed. The answer was a resounding yes. Give the family a break, if the noise of a rooster is offensive, then make it a rule that no roosters are allowed, but what is the harm in allowing chickens? They eat ticks and many other harmful insects while fertilizing the Earth in a sustainable manner. If, and when they are slaughered, it is under much more humane conditions than those that we purchase from the supermarket. Chickens provide us with companionship and allow our children to get back to their roots and appreciate the simple things in life. The girl isn't asking to keep any type of dangerous animal...when was the last time that you heard of a chicken attack?

As someone who lives with neighbors' dogs pooping on my front lawn and their cats hunting with impunity in my yard, it irks me greatly that city councils believe chickens to be a "nuisance" while irresponsible cat and dog owners go entirely under the radar.

I hope this family is vindicated and that the city council ends up eating crow.

And I'll take a crowing rooster over a dog the size of a small car, barking all night long.

But arent you afraid of unfairly stacking the results with all the multiple voting (like I hadda ask THAT question?)
