Wooden drink boxes are collector's items. I'd keep those and hang them on the wall in my house!
My Dad gave me those metal nesting boxes by Beacon. I believe they are 12x12 and have a removeable metal bottom, ventilation in the back, and on the sides of each nest. There's 10 nesting boxes.
I'm not sure how true it is, or just info passed from farmer to farmer, but Dad said the 12x12 boxes are the best for most chickens. They enjoy their own space, have ventilation to keep from overheating in the summer, and you can add hay to them in the winter to keep them warmer. They worked for him my entire childhood, and worked for my great-great-uncle before that!!
