Ok so we have a half dozen smaller chicks (13 wks old) in with our 23 wk old chickens. I have two roos but neither one seems too aggresive...

Anyways, a day ago we discovered one of the smaller chicks limping...and today his leg looks like it has bands of 'bruising" on the leg. He isn't using it ...is still eating and drinking and hopping but was wondering what I could do for the poor thing.

Thankx guys for any ideas.

Hens can also do damage. Really look him over...make sure there is no underlying cause. He very well got into a pecking order scuffle. Keep an eye on him...sometimes there is 1 chick that gets picked on mercilessly.

I won't put birds of different sizes together. Asking for trouble, especially if you have large roos.

Seperate the injured one and let the leg heal.

We have a hen here who I think broke her leg at the knee. Honestly, the other chickens are not picking on her so I left her go without taking her away from the others. She was hopping, putting no pressure on the leg, and couldn't use it at all. Week and a half later she is now getting around A LOT better, her "good leg" has gotten stronger, and she is putting some pressure on the bad leg. No one picks on her. She tends to stay inside the barn where she is safe from predators, but will hop over to the doorway to sun bathe. When everyone is put up, she'll just head over to them and they'll just pile together.

We chose not to separate as for us we wanted her to continue to use the good leg to gain strength, and she was still eating/drinking as normal--and most importantly none of the others were harassing or hurting her. This worked for her, and for us--it may not work for you. If the others were going after her, she'd have been isolated.

Thankx guys I forgot to say that we have isolated the injured chick. We're watching carefully. I'm hoping in a few days we'll see some improvement.

Thankx!

edited to add: these chicks have been with each other for about 3 wks now. No problems that I've seen. Not real sure how this chick was injured.
