I have 6 week old chicks. I have 1 coop with an indoor and an enclosed outdoor section that can be closed off from the inside part and from outside. I have laying hens living in it now. They free range during the day. I have introduced the little chicks to the outdoor portion on warm days just to start getting them used to it and because they're running out of room in my barn. Tonight is supposed to be a low of 35 degrees. The laying hens are inside because of the laying boxes. My question is, is it too cold for the chicks to be outside? And when can I let the chicks free range with no fencing? (My biggest concern is them being around my laying hens). The outside has a roof but the sides are heavy duty wire where wind can blow in.

I'm sorry no one has responded. What did you end up doing? I wouldn't have left them out at that temperature without supplemental heat.
