Hi there,
i have a Light Brahma that is acting very erratically. I have a coop cam installed, i can see and hear the chickens from inside the house. I was hearing a strange noise a bit oven an hour ago, and went to see what it was. . . my other birds were inside ready for bed. . . and "Tiny" was running around in the outdoor part of the coop, banging against the walls. . . clucking up a storm. I thought maybe something scared them and she was giving the warning. . . i picked her up and she started to doze in my arms. . . when i put her back down she runs around like mad and screams (this has happened 3x) . I dont think she would be trying to lay her first egg this soon. I closed the coop door and set her on a perch. . . came back inside and she still clucks every few minutes, for about 2 minutes. . . i've checked on her 2x. . . she is laying in the wood chips (uncomfortably, if i had to guess), her eyes seem to be open extra wide, maybe thats because im scared. . . and now she's panting. . .

im not sure what the problem is. . . it did start to thunderstorm about 10 minutes after i was able to track down what was making the noise. . she should be used to that.

ive given her body a thorough once or twice over, (thinking i'd find a bee gnawing at her leg the way she's acting) everything seems to be fine. For a light brahma she really shouldnt be laying an egg this soon. . . and she's still "Tiny" hence the name.

I'm baffled.

seems she's quieted down since i started typing this out. . . .

thank you in advance,
-worried mom who thinks her chickens are family members

Many times when a chicken gets startled they will go into a panic and it can take a while for them to calm down. Some can even kill themselves in their attempts at flight from the fear. My guess would be the storm started it. Chickens have very poor night vision and an instinctual fear of things going bump in the night. Hopefully by morning she's back to her old self.
