Hello, I have three young pellets; two Golden Sex Links and one Leghorn. One of my Golden Sex Links is approximately 16 or 17 weeks old and the other two are a couple weeks younger. All are kept in a coop with a large run and doing very well; however, I noticed signs that my 16 week old sexlink was preparing to lay her first egg based on her behavior and on August 31, after two days of this behavior she laid a large oblong egg, probably a double yoke, which was concerning but the next day laid a small gem, which had good color and shape but certainly smaller, which I assume is normal. She skipped a day and laid a beautiful perfect shaped egg the next day but has been exhibiting a behavior I'm not sure is normal. I have removed the eggs from the nest box each day and have noticed that she frantically paces around and digs up the run through the day. Is she looking for her eggs or is this normal behavior for a young first time layer? Yesterday I removed her egg and put a ceramic egg in place to see if that made a difference and this morning she went up, laid her egg next to the ceramic egg, and is much calmer.
Also, is the digging a sign that she is hungry and needs more food after laying an egg? My other two pellets are too young to add in the layer feed so she is only eating the organic starter food and any treats I give her.
Thanks you,
Karen
