In the Brooder
Hello everyone. I am brand new to being a chick mom, and one of my babies is showing signs of illness. Seeming a bit more lethargic and moving around less. Yesterday her breathing was fine but right now it seems I am hearing little clicks. The room she is in is not too warm. Right now it might be a little cold, but she has been coming in and out of her brooder plate alright. I am nervous as I don't want her to die, and don't want my other birds sick. Please help! I am anxious and I don't know the next proper steps to take, or I am second guessing myself. Unsure but might be some crackling sound in lungs. I do not see any air bubbles, or any mites/bugs. Eyes and mouth are clear. No swelling. Seems weak to stand. Is eating and drinking when I bright it to the food and water dish. Thank you.
1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
Bird is a baby (few days old) australorp. The chick seems a tiny bit smaller than the others but not by a negligible amount.
2) What is the behavior, exactly.
"She" is acting a little lethargic, seems to be laying down more often. Occasionally putting wing out. Seems to be breathing now with a clicking sound. Was not doing that yesterday.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
I started to become concerned yesterday when the most dominant was starting to peck at her/pick on her.
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
No, not yet.
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
No.
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
I am unsure. She did not seem ill when we got her a few days ago. She has been housed in an insulated room with her brooder plate set up as recommended.
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
She has been eating and drinking. Maybe slightly less than the other more pushy birds.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
I think all the poops I have seen look fairly normal.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?\
Nothing as of yet, which is why I am here.
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
I would like help trying to solve this at home, but would go to a vet if needed-just difficult with Sunday and the Holiday.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
N/A
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use
Paper towels being changed a few times a day.
Thank you for any help you can give me..I am a nervous new chick mom, and I am already attached to this baby! If I need to isolate it I will, but I don't have a second brooder plate. What can I do? I don't want the other birds to become ill.
