I just want to share this. . . I have beeen raising chickens for a little less than 2 years. In our first flock we had 4 hens and 1 accidental rooster (we decided to gamble with "unsexed" barred rocks at TSC and got a BSL cockerel). He ended up being HUGE (towered over the hens) and mean. By 20 weeks, my dogs stopped going outside and started peeing in the house for fear of being attacked by the rooster. He would sprint a quarter acre to attack my small 12 year old dog who was just slowly going out for a pee.
After he also attacked me, my son, and my husband, we gave him away (I feel pretty sure he was processed). I wasn't sure what to do, just that I was terrified to go near the coop, and none of the hens could free range at all because of him.
Anyways, we have added to our existing hens a whole bunch of new Easter Eggers. One turned out to be a roo, and at 17 weeks he is the best! He is super "chill," just hangs out, is nice to the hens, my son can even pick him up! (He doesn't love it, but once it happens, he just accepts it). He also only crows occasionally and the other one crowed every morning at 4am and it was SOOO LOOOUUUD. This one has a crow that is weird (it's still new, so I always get freaked out there's an animal outside, and then realize it's the rooster), but not that loud. He only does it a couple times in the morning (so far, a bit later in the morning thank God) and then on rare occasions in the yard.
We are only at 17 weeks, and I know rooberty can be awful. He is not mounting yet. But I'm so hopeful that there ARE nice roosters out there!!
