I have an 18 week old ISA Brown that I watched lay an egg this evening. After she remained in the nesting box panting for 5 minutes , I went to get her and noticed she’s still in the squat/penguin walk mode. I assume she’s not egg bound but what’s going on? Does she need help?

Sorry to hear about your chick.

Sometimes new layers will lay a few soft-shelled eggs remnants a few hours apart. So she very may well have some leftover eggshell/yolk in her oviduct. If she were mine I might give her a boost of calcium, in the form of either Calcium Gluconate, Calcium Citrate, or some crushed up Tums. In addition, soaking the lower part of her abdomen in warm water may prove to be helpful.

I just went down to grab her and she was settled on top of the coop with the flock (she was hanging inside coop) Should assume she’s ok?
