Hello,

One of my 18 week old pullets seems to be always panting (or at least 80% of the time). It seems like she started panting consistently when we moved them out of their brooder and outside (back at the end of June sometime).

We live near the beach in San Diego and the weather is not severely hot. It has been warm and humid but nothing crazy. I can see why she may pant during the day, but she also pants in the evening when the temperature cools down and is very pleasant. She will be the only one panting out of my flock of six hens. It's really strange! Starting to think something is wrong, however, everything else about her is completely normal. She just started doing the pose so I think she may lay her first egg soon.

Any thoughts on what it could be?

Thanks.

Can you get a video of her? Upload to YouTube and provide a link or you can upload to the BYC Gallery, just let us know where the video is.

How much space do you have?
Does she seem stressed?

A photo of her poop and of her?

Not sure what's going on, this is ongoing for a couple of months?

Have you given any medications to see if those make a difference?

What is her breed? I looked it up and it seems that it has been around 80* highs, is that correct?

One of mine, my light Brahma, pants a lot because of how fluffy she is and because of the feat feathers. If she is a fluffier breed then I am guessing that is probably why but if she isn’t than something could be wrong

I will post a video tomorrow and pics of their space. They have a lot enclosed space to roam safely. And no, she does not seem stressed out.

Our high temps have been closer to 80 degrees with relatively higher humidity so it has been on the warmer side for us. She is an olive egger and she does have feathers on her feet. She does seem on the fluffier side compared to the others so we were thinking that was why she panted so much more. But now that the panting has been going on for a few months, it is starting to worry us. She also doesn't exhibit any other symptoms so we are really perplexed.

If you aren’t seeing anything else worrying then I would just keep an eye on her to see if that changes. Do you have a small water container that they can stand in? That helped all my chickens out when it was in the 90s every day a couple months ago. It also could just be how she is. I have 2 Brahmas of the same age and size yet one of them pants way more than the other. Nothing else is different other than she is more sensitive to high temperatures.

Look forward to seeing the videos.

Here is a link to a video of our panting olive egger. Also included a few pics of their runs...they have access to two different enclosures that are connected by a tunnel (not shown in pics). Plenty of space for six chickens.

She looks quite bright eyed and active. It just may be the way she breaths if she's done this all of her life.

Nice set up and runs!
