1st attempt at hatching with shipped eggs and incubator

lmao, ok ok , so check on day 10... lmao thats soo far away! I guess then I will for sure know though and can toss them if they are a no go. I was at the mother earth fair here in puyallup WA yesterday where there was and APA show and there were so many chicks and eggs for sale.. there was some Silver laced wyandottes for raffle and man if they had been for sale I would have bought a couple, they had some BLRW chicks for sale , but I asked the gal questions and didnt feel comfortable with her knowledge so held off on them too... plus I want to hatch!

I sit on my hands even longer....never candle til day 14. At that stage there is no confusing goers and no-goers and you can pretty much tell if they died early too cos all you see at 14 days is a two thirds black egg if it's still developing.....anything less is a goner.

It is hard to stop yourself interfering but I have found much better hatch rates since I reduced handling and disturbance to a minimum.

Well done for holding off on the chicks at the show too! We don't have such things over here...well, we have shows but not where you can buy livestock and nor do the country stores sell them, it's against our welfare laws.....which I think is a good thing. I think making day olds so readily available tempts people in to impulse buys and the animals potentially end up suffering.....the whole principle of an animal is for life, not just for Christmas/Easter/this weekend/til I get bored/til I realise my obsession has got the better of me and now I have too many or the wrong type or the wrong sex or whatever!

I've noticed lil drops on two of my eggs. Egg 1 and egg 5. What would cause this? There are no cracks in the eggs ...it's hard (reminds me of tree sap look and texture). It wasn't there when the eggs went in the incubator. Is this common or something to worry about ? Thanks!!!

I'd take it easy on the candling as the extra handling your doing could add to any problems. With shipped eggs I check on day 5 and discard any that are not good. Then check again at day 8.

Whoohoo ! I am very excited as I am pretty sure at least 2 of my eggs are developing! I wanted to get pictures , but decided to just be quick about it and get them back in the bator. :)

Egg 1 - pretty sure this one is a "yolker"
Egg 2 - looks great and has a good air sac AND I saw shadowy movement!
Egg 3 - looks a lot like egg 2 but the air sac isn't as good and I didn't see any movement
Egg 4 - unsure
Egg 5 - unsure

iIf I get two chicks I will consider this a success with how far they traveled! :)

So as far as candling goes I candled right before I put the eggs in the bator to know what I started with
Then I candled day 3 ( stupid decision on my part as I really couldn't see anything.
then I candled today on day 10
not sure if I will candle again or not , I may candle one last time before lockdown on day 18 - then I guess I can get rid of egg 1 for sure since by 18 they should be mostly dark at that point.

Watching YOUtube videos has been very deceiving as I saw their day 3 and day 7 candles and thought " Oh I could see that! " lol to be honest all I see are shadowy blobs and thats on day 10!

Next hatch will probably candle only twice on day 10 and day 18...

I will be sure to post if anything exciting happens :)

Okay so I candled yesterday and egg 2 and 3 look good . Dark except for air sac on egg 2 , egg 3 I could not see the air sac well but that shell is darker than egg 2. Also I swear I've seen eggs 2 and 3 "move"

Lockdown is tomorrow so I took my eggs I am sure aren't developing and cracked them open
Egg 1 never developed
