I found the first egg from my 6 buff orpington hens today in the run. I was surprised one of the hens laid it at only 18 weeks and 5 days old. I was figuring they were gonna make me suffer until like 25 weeks. I noticed this one hen was very "friendly" yesterday and for 2 days she's been going in and out of the nest boxes, but found the egg in the run. I have a golf ball, ping pong ball and some brownish/pink rocks that are egg shape in the nest boxes. The wife pointed out that BO's don't lay white eggs so we should have brownish/pink decoy eggs.

Congrats!!

I gave my girls some peer pressure of my own, telling them they were chicken N' dumplings if they did not lay soon. Lo and behold the very next day - an egg.

Good luck and many more happy egg days to you!

Congrats! I have one laying this week too! It's a banner week for first eggs.. my son wants to blow ours out and save it.. but I am dying to crack that baby open and eat some tiny sunny side up eggs. Mom says I will have to use Melba Toast to eat them with, as they would get lost on regular bread!! LOL.

2nd egg was laid while hen was roosting at night egg didn't make it

Going to add some hay flakes for cushion under the roosts in case happens again.

PS So what are nest boxes for again?
