I had problems with temps being high for the first half of incubation. I had some losses and was experiencing problems as a result.

Is this what dry, rough down looks like? I've never hatched before so I don't know if this is normal. This is about 3 hours after hatch.

And is this an unhealed navel? (This is within a few minutes from hatch). The stuff fell off after about 10 minutes. I don't know if that's a moist soft mushy body or a normal body.

The chick looks completely normal. The belly looks good. The lack of fluffing is caused by the high humidity; every "feather" is encased in a coating I believe to be leftover egg white. As the chick dries in normal humidity, the casing hardens and flakes off, assisted by friction with the broody hen.

Good luck on the rest of your hatch.

EDT: In other words, the problem is that the chick has damp down.

That is so helpful, thank you! Phew! I feel so relieved. The humidity is like 70% so that makes sense!!!!
