I was told not to put the new hatches in pine shavings just yet. Can someone tell me why and maybe when I can move them to the normal brooder? I have 20 eggs in and 5 have hatched so far. I have a new chick brooder set up with firm cloth at the bottom (can be switched out easily) instead of pine shavings. I haven’t moved them from the incubator yet, I’m going to give it some time and then move the dry chicks and refill the reservoir and seal it again.

Perhaps because newly hatched chicks peck at everything, and ingesting pine shavings would be detrimental. Once they know what/where the feed is they are less likely to ingest shavings.
