1st time Broody Hatch

Ridge runner thanks for the tips and answers. I’ll clean up what I can and give Moma a day or so more then clean everything. I’ll open the door Saturday and Try to keep an eye on everything going on in the coop. We have a pretty large area for our girls. Coop is 8x12 covered run is the same plus 20x60 ish with netting over it. Lots of options here!

Sorry to hear that. I've never had another adult harm a chick but others have. I did have one broody hen that killed two of her six chicks, I have no idea why, but she raised the other four. I have no idea what happened in your case but that is disappointing to say the least.

Usually when they hatch that switches them from incubating mode to raising mode. Since she has none to raise that should break her. I don't know if that will happen since hers died before she brought them off the nest. If she stays in incubating mode tonight I'd break her.
Ive taken her out of the box for now. For the past 20 minutes or so, she’s not returned. We’ll see how the day goes.
Thank you for your reply!

So the 2nd chick hatched but did not survive either. I will look into separating them next time. My question becomes, what now. I have removed both chicks. Will she continue to stay broody.

if she returns go to the feed store get a few chicks tonight remove her to a quiet place giving her the chicks one by one

Great idea! Last I checked though, none of them had chicks anymore. I may be able to find some locally through fb or other online sales.

My broody hatched her chicks just yours is. She protected them from the others and taught them how to forage. I just made sure there was food and water and a place to nest on the floor. I feed all flock so oyster shell is on the side anyway. Your chicks don't need the same amount of calcium the layers do.

Expect mama to be protective even with you. Here chicks were out of tge nest in 2 days, outside learning to forage in a day or two.

Good luck! How exciting, I hope you post pics! :pop

Unfortunately they hatched but neither survived. ☹️ I do have a picture of both chicks but didn’t think I should post it.
