You can also make a mama heat cave with a heating pad. Similar to a heat plate but cheaper. Let me see if I can fine a link to that on here.

If her chicks are being shipped then this is not recommended until they're around a week or 2 old.

By gettinga different wattage bulb, is it ok that it's not red? I know it's to prevent possible attacking of there's blood. I also wonder about the day/night light aspect of having white light 24/7. I have windows in the garage for natural light but they don't open anymore...old house.

I hardly ever use red bulbs, just white. Honestly I've done it for 15 years and have never noticed any adverse effects from the light on all the time.

Another option for bulbs (especially if you want red ones) is the reptile section in pet stores, they go as low as 60 or 75W I believe.
