1st-time quail girl, chicks are coming tomorrow - I need tips!

I'd never leave them out at night - I only have 3 hens, and they're my pets, spoiled rotten and catered to from dawn til dusk. I can always make them a smaller run within the run, or next to it, so that egg collecting is easier. Do quail ever use ground nests?
I also have plenty of piperazine (for the cat and chickens, in the past) - one hen picked up gapeworm from the soil last year.
Also, I use horse pellet sawdust shavings for the hens, isn't that fine for the quail? I feel that keeping their feet on wire for their entire lives could lead to broken or deformed toes. It's an unnatural living environment, and I'd think it would stress them out.

I assume you read Mother Earth News and thought this would be GOOD for your blog. Since you only have four just keep them like parakeets and you should be fine:)

No offense, but... In your original post you asked for tips and stated " Honestly, I know as much about quail as I do about theoretical physics." But you seem to not want to hear, what I consider to be good advise, at every turn. Best of luck with your birds. Bill

Actually, I don't read Mother Earth News. And I didn't buy an animal because it would be 'good for my blog'. I think I'll stick to the chicken forums, and leave the elitism over here.
Thanks for answering my questions, btw

Now there ya go Bill. Had yer reply been a tad bit more brutal, or had you added a couple of well placed #$%@'s here and there, this thread would have gotten as crazy as a drunk Libyan dictator with a bucketfull of hand grenades.

WELL NOW IF ELITISM MEANS PROPER ANIMAL HUSBANDRY FOR A DIFFERENT SPECES THAT REQUIRES IT THEN I SUPPOSE THAT FITS, ALBEIT RUDE AND OFFENSIVE.

HERE'S THE PROBLEM WITH QUAIL AND OTHER GAMEBIRDS... THE EXOTIC FACTOR, CHICKEN FOLK SEE THEM AND LIKING BIRDS IN GENERAL GET ATTRACTED BY THE EXOTIC FACTOR OF THE GAMEBIRDS. THEY WANT THEM FOR IT BUT WANT TO CARE FOR AND TREAT THEM LIKE CHICKEN. QUAIL ARE NOT CHICKENS! ASIDE FROM FEATHERS THEY ARE WORLDS APART. THERE ARE SPECIFIC REASONS THE STANDARDS OF CARE ARE THE WAY THEY ARE IN THE GAMEBIRD WORLD AND ELITISM ISNT IT. THEY GET PARASITES EASIER AND ARE HARDER TO TREAT, OFTEN TIMES RESULTING IN THEIR DEATH. THEY GET DISEASES (WHICH OTHER POULTRY ARE THE MAIN CARRIERS OF) AND DO NOT RESPOND TO TREATMENTS THAT ARE EASILY ACQUIRED OR ADMINISTERED, AND DISPITE BEING CURED WILL SEROCONVERT TO CARRIERS AND INFECT THE REST OF YOUR GAMEBIRD FLOCK AND KILL THEM. THERE ARE MANY REASONS WHY GAMEBIRDS ARE DIFFERENT AND THE CARE REQUIRED FOR THEM IS DIFFERENT AS WELL, ALL READILY AVAILABLE TO OPEN MINDED POULTRY ENTHUSIASTS FREE FOR THE ASKING RIGHT HERE ON THIS VERY FORUM. BUT AS WITH ANY FORM OF ADVICE IT HAS THE UNIVERSAL HOOK---- IF YOU DONT WANT TO KNOW, DONT ASK.

BY YOUR OWN POSTING HERE YOU ADMIT TO NOT KNOWING ANYTHING ABOUT THE SPECES, IN ANOTHER YOU ADMIT THE ANIMALS IN YOUR CARE HAVE ALREADY HAD AN ENCOUNTER WITH GAPE WORM DURING THIS TIME, THAT MEANS YOU HAVE GAPE WORM CONTAMINATION ON YOUR PROPERTY. ON THE MOST WARM AND FRIENDLY WAY I CAN SAY IT IN PRINT--- WELCOME TO THE QUAIL FORUM AND HAVE FUN LEARNING ABOUT YOUR NEW BIRDS DIFFERING CARE NEEDS VARY FROM YOUR CHICKENS, OR YOU CAN GO BACK TO THE CHICKEN SECTION AND END UP WITH UNSAVORY RESULTS IN QUAIL KEEPING AS MANY INDIVIDUALS DO WHEN THEY COME HERE AND "ANSWER SHOP"

@~rosecityfarmgirl~@ :

I've often seen pictures on here of coops with chickens below, and quail in little pens above? And security of the pen isn't an issue at all - it's 1/4 and 1/2 inch hardware cloth on top, sides, and under the earth.
In fact, the woman that I bought them from kept her adult quail right next to her hens, in the same barn. I'll definitely look into this further!

Not a matter of if but when .........

good luck with your birds, the poster who spoke about raising them like parakeets gave good advice until you have a few more.
