I have sand in the trays of the Chick-n-Hutches...have a scoop that is screen wire that sifts the sand and keeps the poo, feed and whatever else the chickens dropped through the wire.
Works great.
One reason I got chickens was so I had something to heat my compost pile up.
ETA: Chicken poo is high in nitrogen so if you are adding it to a compost pile be sure to add enough browns so it does not smell. Neighbors might complain. My pile is hot right now...neighbor behind me gave me 6 bags of fresh grass clippings plus I added some chicken poo.
