I understand that chickens under certain circumstances should not be raised in cages, but I have no other choice. Is 1x2 inch welded wire as flooring to large for pearl leghorns? Minus the exceptions for it being to large for coons to reach in and etc. Will the chickens be able to walk on the wire without their feet falling through. The leghorns are approx. 15 weeks old!

I agree with drumstick diva...I think that would be hard on their feet. You might try doing a search on wire flooring to see if anyone else has tried it.

Good luck to you!

That's going to be disaster. Their feet will fall through. Predators could just grab them from below. Can you imagine walking on welded wire al day, every day? If you are gonna use wire floor use hardware cloth and cover with straw or wood chips or something.

I think I will put a lanolin floor over the wire so it can be rinsed off easily and will be easier on their feet. I do not live in the country where the chickens can roam freely.

That will work. I don't let mine roam free either but why not build a run with dirt floor? Or a chicken tractor?

I have them in a chicken tractor now. The problem with that is the smell of the chicken droppings. I rinse them into the ground, but it stills smells. With the elevated cage I am going to put pull out trays underneath and dispose the manue daily. I live in a neighborhood where the average residence is approx. $350,000.00. The neighborhood is like the movie Pleasentville, they complain if a persons dog uses the restroom in their yard. So im pushing my luck aleady!
