They seem ready to eat things besides their baby mash? Can I try? Anything an absolute no-no?

sure! momma hen would have given them treats and such by now! just make sure they have chick grit to help digestion. and whatever you give them, make sure it is soft to start with, like cooked oatmeal or worms or something

Chicken Grit is a great mystery...I have never found it either. I do take the regular grit pound it with a huge hammer till it is smaller. I then sprinkle it on the food and on the floor of the brooder. I also pull large hunks of grass up and feed it to them.

I got lucky and found it at TSC but there were very few bags of it, almost like people had been stocking up to prepare for chicks. So I know they carry it... maybe ask them when their next order is, if they plan on getting more. Its REALLY fine, almost like sand but bigger particles.

Well, now I know.
I have used pet bird grit from a pet supply. They carry different sizes for canaries/parakeets/cockatiels....

I just read somewhere on here that pet bird grit has too much calcium in it.

Manna Pro makes Chick Grit. They sell it at TSC... you'll likely find it on display near the brooders full of chicks.

As long as they have chick grit, your chicks could have started on other "treats" earlier. Mealworms are BIG favorites. So is finely choped apple and bell pepper and zucchini. The only no-no is potato peels. Off the top of my head I don't remember why, other than that it's very bad for chickens.
