Hi all, I have 2 broody BCM pullets that are in separate part of coop in a 6x6 area with both girls in their own nest box. Today 1 egg each hatched. The nest boxes each have a 2.5 inch board to keep things from falling out, my question is should I remove these boards so chicks can get to the waterer? I don't know if a momma will pick up her chicks to put them back in nest. I raised these bcm's in a brooder from day 2. Just want to do the right thing now that they are each mommas. 1 other thing should I separate these mommas? they have set side by side for the last 3 weeks. Thanks Mac

You may have already discovered if that was too high for them to jump... I'd remove the board or make a temporary ramp in and out. Then keep an eye on them and see what is or is not working. They need to be able to follow Momma (when she decides to leave the nest) for warmth and to learn from her how to eat and drink.

Separation is best. Let the chicks bond with their Momma and let her protect her chicks. Later, preferably a few weeks later, under close supervision you can see if they'll be OK in the same space.
