Are the Chicks with the red marker on there heads red stars?, I ordered 25 brown egg layer assortment and they added some redstar roos for warmth, is that them? Queston 2 when is it safe to switch the chicks to pine shavings, I have them on towels with the shaving under them, they were hatched last Sat. and are eating and drinking well. the reason i ask is that my shavings are the premium bedding and it is very fine, i am afraid the chicks will eat it?

I would try after two days and see what happens. If you see them pecking the litter put the towels back down, but they've usually figured out what food is in under two days. Paper towels can stay damp and you want your chicks to stay dry. I like corn cob litter instead of shavings, but I'm the only person on here, that I know of, who uses it. It isn't dusty and is safer for the chicks. It also drains well. If you have a problem with them picking the shavings you might want to try it.

BTW, I agree the spotted ones, most likely, are your roos.
