After much time from wife I have agreed to getting chickens in the back yard. I am excited we live in the suburbs and would like to keep it too three hens. Wife wants chicks to come from the Easter bunny cool idea. I would like to get a laying hen to start things off. I am working on coop designs and will start the coop-run soon. Our kids Boy 5- 6 at end of March, girl 4 – at end of July.

So my question if we get chicks at Easter with an older laying hen, Will the hen be ok alone and will she Take to the new chicks ok when it is time? Wife wants to keep the chicks in the house when young.

A hen will be ok by herself although she would be happier with a friend. Do not put a chick with a hen until the chick is older, at least 20 weeks old. You can keep them in the same run but separated until then. Chicks should be in house under heat lamp until they feather out. Do your research and have fun.

Just want to say
