We recently bought a new chick so that our little week-old Beatrice could have a friend. When we brought Queso (our new chick) home she was already 2 weeks old and alot larger. We worried that she would be mean to B at first and maybe bully her, but the first day she was really to scared to do much of anything. B was the one pecking her! She kept going for Queso's eyes. Well now it's reversed. Queso has been beating B up all day, pecking at her eyes and such. Queso can fly a bit too, and always follows B around, pecking her. Now B keeps shutting her eye, and we're worried that Queso hurt her. We've started her on some Baytril (antibiotic) to ward off infection. What should we do? We don't want to seperate them because there's only the two of them but we don't know how to stop Queso from beating Beatrice up! HELP!

Use a red light bulb instead of a regular white one.
This can help with pecking a lot!!

If Queso is beating her up and she can't get away, Beatrice is going to get hurt. I think your best option would be to either separate the brooder into two parts or putting B in a different brooder and putting it right up against the one with Queso in it. This makes it so they can "see" but not touch. They won't be lonely but it will give them a bit of a break. Try leaving them like that for a few days and putting them together should go smoother.

Best of luck!

Use Blue Kote to spray on the areas that she got pecked....if the chicken that does the pecking sees bare areas or draws blood and sees the red exposed skin or flesh she will relentlessly peck her too death and you can wake up to a dead chick. Blue Kote will save a hens life! The Blue Kote is a Bluish/purple spray that covers the red and bare skin and the chickens cannot see the exposed area....its a MUST have for chicken owners. In brooders dont use a white lite either, red discourages pecking, and the above reply is correct, to introduce chickens let them see each other through a cage or protected area for a few days, there will be some "pecking" order to establish who is boss but them it should settle down. Sometimes there is none at all! Good luck and update us!
