In checking for pasty butt this morning, I noticed a few of the chicks with it, cleaned them up no problem.
This one little girl though seems to me to be really bad. Her butt area is red, she keeps picking at it. She pretty much stands until she can't stay awake any longer, then falls over to sleep for a bit.
I washed her off with a warm wet cloth, then when I couldn't get it all, I held her little butt in some warm water, dried her off and put some olive oil on. She has since pooped, and it looks normal. She then ate some yogurt out of my hand.
She has been fine with the others, stays pretty much where it's warm and they are not bothering her or pecking at her, I can just tell she is not happy.
Should I separate her from the others, or will I just make her miserable by herself?
Is there anything else I can do?
She is the smallest out of all 28 chicks, she's a Buff Orpington, and I think she may have been one of the packing peanuts.
I feel so bad for her.....

If she's the smallest, she may not be getting enough food.
You could try giving her a little cooked oatmeal to get her going.

I had a little one (2-day old speckled sussex) doing the same thing about 4 weeks ago. I kept it cleaned off and applied a little preparation H to the red area for a few days. She is doing really well...a little smaller than the rest, but very healthy and no more problems.

Okay, I now have her isolated, so she can have some quiet. She is actually in a small box inside the brooder.
She just stands there, poor thing. As far as I can tell she is not interested in drinking, although I put a small cap with water in her box, showed her where it was, and she took a little bit.
Not interested in the oatmeal at all. She will eat warmed yogurt out of my hand.
Also, as far as I can tell she is not pooping.
When she stands on my hand, her feet actually feel pretty warm, I am assuming she is running a fever?
No car here, so cannot go get Prep H, would cool witch hazel help?
Now, I have another one, not so bad, but she is so feisty it's hard to get her to stay still for a cleaning, she is pooping.

Hi! Sorry about the chicks...it is so hard! I had one with a pasty bum. Once I got it cleaned up I put a little regular triple antibiotic on it. Seemed to cool the redness down, didn't think to try prep H. Good luck!
