So I picked up three new 5.5 month old Easter Egger pullets last Sunday (8 days ago). One of them has laid a pretty blue egg just about every day. The other two just laid their very first eggs last night...but neither of them have a shell. I read somewhere that this is normal for pullets who have just started laying, and that it may take them a week or so for their machinery to work out the kinks. Have you found this to be true?
I have started adding oyster shell in a separate container to their feed regimen, and am giving them BOSS and mealworms for added fat and protein since they're a bit thin. I have never had hens this young before. I am new to chickens and all of my other girls are 2-3 years old. Is there anything else I can do to help support them while their egg laying is kicking into gear?

Yes, I find this to be true for new layers.
The move itself could have caused the shell less eggs too.
Moves are stressful.

I think layer feed is better than an all flock type feed. Especially if you only have layers.

And then I found THIS funny-looking thing when I went to check their nest box when I got home just now:

What it looks like next to one of my Ameraucanas' eggs:

ETA: Their eggs are much bluer than they look in this photo. Crappy indoor lighting. :p

I have the same issue with a new 5 month old red link we have had about a week and a half, layer feed here, and oyster shell supplements, with meal worm treats once a day. She has laid every combination, very soft shells that break when she lays, no shell at all, and once not even a yolk, just a blob of egg white, but she has had two whole eggs with fairly thick shells. So I think we have normal move stress here, combined with new layers, that I hope will get better once our girls settle down! Good luck!
