So I picked up three new 5.5 month old Easter Egger pullets last Sunday (8 days ago). One of them has laid a pretty blue egg just about every day. The other two just laid their very first eggs last night...but neither of them have a shell. I read somewhere that this is normal for pullets who have just started laying, and that it may take them a week or so for their machinery to work out the kinks. Have you found this to be true?
I have started adding oyster shell in a separate container to their feed regimen, and am giving them BOSS and mealworms for added fat and protein since they're a bit thin. I have never had hens this young before. I am new to chickens and all of my other girls are 2-3 years old. Is there anything else I can do to help support them while their egg laying is kicking into gear?
