The egg just hatched 2 hrs ago. Now what? Does he need water? Do I need to dip his beak in the water? What should I do now?

You need to let him dry and fluff up in the hatcher before taking him out and putting him in a brooder with a heat lamp. When any bird hatches it has absorbed the yolk sack which is what feeds them during incubation. The yolk sack will sustain him for the first 24 hours. Once he is dry and fluffy you can put him in his brooder with some water and feed. Just dont get worried when he doesnt imediately go drink and eat. I wouldnt try dipping his beak either it could drown him. Just let instinct take over when he is ready he will eat and drink. Congrats on the new gosling!

Congrats on your new gosling. As 8 says let the gosling dry off and fluff. It will take just a bit for baby to get on it's feet. When the baby is transferred to the brooder do not make it drink they pick up these things on their own. Just ease back and relax.

Just remember... This only applies to waterfowl.... Turkeys are dumb as bricks and do need their beaks dipped.... In case you ever hatch turkeys ;) lol

Very cute. Like they said wait for it to fluff up. A lot of things say to wait for the others to hatch and not open the bator until their all hatched but mine started pooping and I believe the bacteria killed some..... Do you have more that need hatching? What breed, do you know? Best of luck!

Don't know what breed. I took 2 eggs from my mom's geese, but only one hatched. The other one never developed. I just left it there for companionship.

How's the gosling doing? once it dry and fluffs and stands up you might want to put it in the brooder to keep it from burning itself on the element in the bator.

Thank you all for the replies. I hatched 5 baby silkies and they all die within a week. I am too depressed to keep the gosling. Leaving the gosling with my mom.

Update pic of the little guy.

Thats a white chinese gosling. I can see the place for the knob on the bill. Cute!
But is that part of the membrane on him still? What is that brownish spot along his neck. If thats the membrane you need to take a Q-tip or cottonball with warm water and dampen it until you can get it off him. He will go bald if you leave that on him.

X2, how's it doing though? and so sorry for your losses. Does your mom know how to care for the gosling?

Yes, the membrane is attached to him. Okay, I will let my mom know. My mom has 2 geese already (the parents), so I hope she knows how to take care of it. Probably better survival rate than staying with me.
