My ameraucana/ee has been laying for about 2 months now. Every egg is still soft. I know that this is normal for the first few weeks. But 2 months!? She gets layer pellets, oyster shell free choice, greens, and alittle scratch. She is healthy and happy.

Will she ever lay normal egg shells? Is she perhaps not developed right in the egg laying department and will never lay good eggs? I keep hoping and waiting that she will outgrow this but it doesn't seem to be happening. Should I cull or get rid of her or should I wait alittle longer?

Any suggestions/advise would be appreciated.

Mary

I had a bird like that. I bet she is not eating the calcium. Here's what I did, get plain yogurt or cottage cheese and add crushed unflavored Tums into it. You could try just adding the calcium you have to it. You will have to do this every three or four days for a few weeks but It's my opinion some birds systems take some time to start working correctly. She did grow out of it so there is hope.

Asiatic... How long did your chicken lay the soft eggs? Do you still give her the plain yogurt or cottage cheese occasionally?

Maree....They do free-range. Or at least that's what I call it. They are let out each morning and go into a long run that is mostly bare. That's why I give greens everyday.

Thanks

I'm dealing with this same problem with a D'uccle girl.

What I have done that appears to work, I'll know by tomorrow. I'm supplementing her with a calcium drench and vitamin D3.

After the first dose she laid two eggs with shells. I skipped a day and she laid a soft shelled egg today. This morning I again made up hand rearing formula with .40 cc's of calcium drench and a 2000 mg D3 capsule.

Remind me to let you know what happens because I'll forget.
