I am yet do the 'shooting' of the dogs... with all the strays we have around here and my county will NOT take these animals as they are over run, they want me to just let them go, or shot them!!! Grrrrr

Honestly, if I had no chose but to shoot, I will... however today I physically tackled 2 dogs in my yard that got INTO my coop while I was in it cleaning. They chased the chickens out into the yard and kept going until I cornered and tackled them. Thank goodness I noticed they were still 'puppyish' or I wouldn't have dared. They were more chasing for fun, so I didn't panic.

Anyways, I pretty much KNOW where they came from, but no who's they were.... and at this point I didn't care. I loaded both 'puppies' into my car (My dog was freaking out but thankfully tied up!), and made some call to find out no one would take them... though I was told I HAD to let them go... that keeping the dogs locked up, tied up or continuing to hold them on my property is stealing since our county has no leash law.

Well, anyways... they can go choke on a bone thats a moronic thing to say. A dog with no tags is not a happy healthy dog and by NO means should be 'released'. The dog needs a proper place where its safe and fed and its owners can come claim it....

So I went to a neighboring county and dropped them off at the SPCA there!

Just wanted to get that off my chest since it took ALL afternoon to get these dogs somewhere.... and NO ONE ever came looking for these dogs the rest of the day either! People need to actually LOVE their pets... that means tagging them if they want them back, and get them fixed! Both these boys were in tack and were around 8 months old!!!

Well IF the owners are concerned for or looking for their pets they will look, or should I say should look, in neighboring county shelters. People should be more responsible. You did the right thing by taking them somewhere to be cared for.

I think you did the right thing. You have more patience than I do.

It would be bad enough if the law told the OP to release a coon or fox. But a puppy, whose chances of survival are nearly nil? I wonder WHERE they would have recommended to let them go, pray tell? NIMBY!!!

This is just crazy.

Adds insult to injury to bring the concept of theft into this picture.

Ugh.

Oh, BTW, this is just crazy, in case I didn't mention it.

Sounds like our county! I once had a dog show up in my yard, ATTACKing my old hound.. I called the Humane Soc. and they said--"IF you catch him and put him in a crate, we'll pick him up.. If not, just shoot him and throw him beside the road-county will pick him up!" Stupid! Stupid!!

I am glad you took them to the SPCA and hopefully someone will adopt them that will keep them home...Dixie

This is really such a sad thread. It is about irresponsible pet owners, and the failure of agencies (government or otherwise) to deal with them adequately. So sad that the dogs (same for cats and other animals) suffer as a result, instead of the owners.

Unless a whole lot of pet owners get their act together soon, I fear we will soon be dealing with taxation and regulation that no one really wants.

It is sad. And I can relate. What do you do with them? I don't know.

We had a real problem with strays. I live in the country and we have no dog laws, it's same attitude your facing with the overruns and such. Fortunately, most of the people around here have a heart and don't shoot them. We did get the problem under control 2 years ago though, well mother nature did I should say. We had a kitty (Mt. Lion) who decided he like the taste of dog. Attacked my 13 yr old little mutt in my yard, who's vision was nearly gone and had half of his teeth missing from being kicked by a horse when he was young. The only reason he lived is because I had a very brave heeler run the cat off. And we did some serious home care for over a month. 3 days later I found a dog that had been eaten at the side of the road. Most of that summer, reports were coming in about the cat being sited. Along with prints in front of dog kennels. Finally, by the end of that summer that Tom heard a friend of mines dog barking and thought he'd have a treat. Well, my friend breeds Old English Mastiffs (his female is 250lbs and the male was 325lbs and not done growing). The cat was about 125lbs at that point and the female mastiff put a serious hurt on the kitty. My friend was in tears when his dog came back because she was soaked in blood and he figured he was going to have to put her down. He first hosed her off to see how bad the damage was and luckily not a drop of that blood was hers. Game & Fish found the kitty and stated they've never seen a dog hurt a cat so badly, it had a 1 inch wide cut from the neck down to the rib cage. I believe they were able to patch the kitty up and relocate him.

I don't really recommend it as a form of dog control, but if mother nature is willing it does work. Our stray population did drop dramatically that year. I guess something had to give.

edit: Oh yea, I must say. Your page on your chicken coop design was the primary motivator to my coop. It's quite similar. Thanks!!!

I would be starting a petition in the county to get so type of animal control, I've never seen a bad stray dog problem just a run away here and there but we have really bad problems with peoples inside/outside or just plain outside cats, my grandpa was in the rental business all of my childhood and there is no worse enemy of a trailer park owner than feral house cats besides my neighbors 2 cats and step sisters 1 killing between $200 and $300 of my birds.
my grandpa had 2 tentants that were cat horders and several that fed them so that didn't help either.
