2 questions re. BBS pairings

Doesn't matter which is the rooster and which is the hen in the BBS colors. And you may get those percentages if you hatch a large number, but in smaller numbers of eggs, like a group under a broody, you can get any combination of the three colors when breeding blues. I've had small hatches that were all black and splash and no blue, as an example.

The reality is that for each chick, the probability relates to the mentioned percentages. For blue X blue, each chick has a 25% chance of inheriting 0 copies of Blue (black), 25% chance of inheriting two copies of Blue (splash) and 50% chance of inheriting one copy (blue). With large numbers of chicks, the total outcome for all chicks tends to reflect this ratio, but with small numbers, it does not. What most of us fail to realize is that with each chick you are starting on a fresh equation--previous chicks and the genes they inherited are not factored in. It is actually surprising that small numbers of chicks reflect the ratios as often as they seem to.
