1) I bought my grit before I got the chicks and it is a size 2. I put some in a small coffee can lid and they go crazy over it. Is this normal to love grit?

2) Do any of you sprinkle food or treats in the bedding for them to scratch at? My 18 1wk old chicks are tirelessly scratching in the pine shavings and I kinda feel sorry for them. Seems like they should be able to find a goodie once in a while. (BTW I have been giving them a smashed egg or a cut up strawberry but not hidden in the bedding....)

They are so fun to watch I could spend hours out there!!!!

yes they love grit, I don't know why lol

Usually mine make such a mess with their food they end up with a bunch of crumbles hiding in the bottom of the brooder.

While I can't say it isn't good to offer them grit, I can say they don't need it. The basic chick starter has everything they need. On the other hand I do believe many problems with pasty butt are due to the "treats" folks insist on feeding their chicks.

Chicks are after all babies. I do believe more chicks die from kindness of well meaning owners.
