I have a free range flock with 35 mature hens and 2 cockerels. For the longest time the cockerels avoided the hens like the plague and the flock was peaceful. One on one they were no match for the hens. Then the juvenile delinquents learned to work together and tag team a hen. One would hold her down by the head while the other did his thing, then they'd switch places. Repeatedly.
This earned them a trip to jail in short order. Cooling their heels hasn't managed to improve their manners so this weekend they're getting a free trip to the freezer.
You may want to get at least one pen set up now before any problems happen. Even if aren't in immediate use for it now you're probably going to need it for the cockerels you hatch. Extra pens come in handy.
