2 Sick Brahmas - Please Help!!

Light Brahma is 2 1/2 yr old hen who's eyes & nose are crusted over with yellow mucous that we're cleaning off. She is drinking but not eating very much. No other symptoms as of now. I did give her a dose of Kali Bich 30c last night & she seems a little better today.

Dark Brahma is 1 1/2 yr old hen who is coughing/sneezing with an open mouth. I can't see anything in her mouth/throat. Sometimes has blood flecks come up when she coughs. No other symptoms.

We've brought both in the house in seperate boxes. It's been frigid here for about 3 weeks & they are free range but have a coop that stays quite a bit warmer than outside. They get wormed with DE & also get ACV in their water every few weeks for a few days. No new birds, feed changes, etc. Does anybody have any ideas what could be wrong with our girls?? No one else is sick & I'm keeping a VERY close eye on everybody esp. with this darn weather. Could it be a cold? Thanks!

Oh dear, I'm sorry you have sick girls. It sounds like you are doing the right things.

I am no expert, but have read on here a couple of times that chickens don't just get a "cold". Maybe some of the more experience people will weigh in.

What is Kali Bich?

Make sure they are drinking as fluids are VERY important. To get their appetites going make them some scrambled egg mixed with well cooked pasta. Fruits are great to get fluids into their systems but can cause diarrhea if you give too much. Maybe a few grapes cut into thirds or small pieces of watermelon or strawberry.

It's a homeopathic remedy good for nasal issues. After reading more on the forum, I really hope it's not coryza. Her face isn't swollen or smelly though (maybe I caught it early?). The light brahma is drinking good but I'll try some scrambled eggs with her & fruit too. The dark is not wanting to do either so I'll try a few drops in her beak. Wish I knew how they got it though - we haven't added any birds in several months (almost a year). Thanks!

It sounds respiratory. Can you get some Tylan or Batril? Water soluble Tylan is sold at firststatevetsupply.com but it's not cheap. Make sure you get the soluble Tylan and not the injectable kind. I hate to give my chickens injections.

Your state could have different rules than my state. You might be able to purchase these products over the counter at your feed store.
