Hello all, One of my hens hatched some chicks last Monday (6-14-21). Only 4 of them survived (3 died within the first 2 days). The last one is eating, drinking and pooping and seems relatively active. However. On Monday of this week she developed an open sore that appears to be a bulbous. I've been putting peroxide on it and alternating that with Neosporin. It doesn't seem to be getting better but doesn't seem to be getting worse either.

At first I thought it was one of the other hens pecking her or even mother hen accidentally stepping on her/scratching so I separated the other hens but kept the chick with her mother. The chick still eats and drinks and poops fine and still has energy. From time to time she seems somewhat lethargic but I've never had chicks this small so I'm not sure what is normal for them. She also has a small wounds on her back and one on her left wing although they aren't as large as this one on her right breastplate.

Has anyone ever seen/heard anything like this? I've read about crop getting full but this has been like this for 5 days and is not just bulbous but an open wound too. I'll try to attach a pic to this post.

Thank you for the reply! I've only been feeding her medicated feed as I got conflicted info on feeding them grit. Do you think I should feed her grit?

It looks like she’s outside and foraging (or at least can eat the straw) so I would sprinkle some grit in her food or just around. Usually if chicks can eat anything but their food or water, I give them grit to help digest.

You are correct, she has access to straw and anything on the ground in her run. I'll get some grit today and try that. Thank you for the assist!

Little chick is still eating, drinking, pooping and has plenty of energy. The wound/sore has crusted over and appears to be getting smaller. Hopefully it is the crop just getting smaller. I didn't think it would take days for this to happen though. I have been feeding her grit with the medicated chick food.

The pics are hard to show anything as the feathers are growing back over it.
The black part in the pictures is the blood/scab of the wound. I'll continue to monitor it.

Thanks for all the replies and concern! This site really is a great source of info and an awesome community.
