Wow. I'm so sorry for your loss. Don't be too hard on yourself, you were trying to do good things for your birds. And now you've shared your experience with others so that they can learn with you. Think of the multitudes of future chicks you may have saved!
About the medicated feed- from what I understand, it's not medicated with antibiotics, but works more like a vaccine. If I remember and understand correctly, it contains trace amounts of the weakened bacteria that causes coccidiosis (found in feces and anything that feces has ever touched, among other places) so that the chicks can gradually build up an immunity. That makes me a little more comfortable about using it, just knowing that I'm not contributing to some superbug in the future.
