2 week old chick stopped walking

It takes at least 3 weeks after exposure to Mareks for symptoms to show up in any chicken or baby chick. And 3 weeks old would still be rare for a chick with Mareks to have those symptoms. Usually Mareks symptoms would normally occur between 5 weeks to 7 months old if exposed.

I might be imagining it, but the left leg seems most affected in the video. In the pic below, the right leg has valgus deformity, and varus or valgus deformities are common in all poultry. They can affect one leg or both, and when they affect both legs, the hock joints can appear eith knock kneed in valgus or bowlegged in varus deformity. However, I would still give the vitamins and hope it it just an injury or deficiency. Here is some info on varus valgus deformities, and another link about how to make a chick chair to get her upright:

I’m not saying this chick has Marek’s. However, according to the DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVP at UC Davis who performed my hen’s necropsy, it does (rarely) happen at two weeks. Screen shot of the email attached.

Good to know. I do think they probably will have some some effects from Mareks when exposed young, but just thought it took 3 or more weeks for symptoms to show up. I have read that there are brain effects before symptoms are seen. Immunity probably is surpressed early as well.

Some of the literature does say three weeks. Maybe this is newer information. I’m finding the longer I keep at this, the more I think, “I wish I had known that before I...” It’s heart warming and heart breaking all at the same time. Even though it’s a “hobby” for many, I still think it’s important work. Chickens (and other fowl) are so grossly misunderstood by the general population.

The idea of keeping a flock generated from healthy (documented) stock is growing on me. They can live like pets like mine do, but instead of raising only girls, keep all but the best flock rooster boys in a bachelor area, give them a wonderful life, and maybe even... euthanize as humanely as possible and eat them. No more contributing to the huge (cruel) commercial poultry industry, and you still get to enjoy keeping them. Ok, sorry. Getting way off topic here. I’m just reflecting on how my position evolves as I go through more experiences. As of right now, I’m still not eating chicken. But I buy it for my family and have a sinking feeling when I can’t even find pasture raised chicken. Ok, I will really stop now.
Sorry, mods, that this is probably inappropriate for the emergency forum.

I have a two week old chick that suddenly stopped walking. It will scoot around and is quite rambunctious with chirping. We will try to stand her up and she seems to move her feet and tries with all her might to stand but just falls back down. I have been dipping her beak in water and she has eaten a few crumbles that we put on a paper towel. We have separated it from the other 16 chicks (they all seem to be acting normal). I have done some research and I am guessing this may be related to a vitamin deficiency. I have read that I could supplement with Poly vi sol or poultry nutri drench. What are your recommendations? I am also wondering if I should prophylactically provide a supplement to the other chicks.

Thanks!
Hi what was the outcome of the baby chick? I have a 5 day old chick that was perfectly fine and this morning she didn’t stand up I brought her over to the waterer and drank electrolytes then to the food and ate and pooped so I don’t know what to do? The other 8 baby chicks are fine.

Could you get some pictures of the chick? Could she have gotten trampled or injured? I would keep offering water and food. If you have something like Poultry NutriDrench that might be good to give a couple of drops. If she doesn’t start standing and walking, you may want to make her a little chicken sling chair, where she can sit up and eat/drink. Here are some examples:
