OK so I have 3 Leghorns and 3 Tukens in a bin untill they are feathered enough to put in the chicken run. The problem I see is that all 6 of them look like their bellies have been plucked!! And its just from the neck down to almost their but mainly in the area where they lay down. I keep straw in their bins and we change it out every day to keep it dry and clean. I also have a bin w/ ducklings and another with Road Ilands but none of them have that problem. I'm wondering if the straw is irritating their undersides or if its something else entierly. They dont look sick and they are deff not acting sick. The skin does not look red or inflamed so I have no idea whats going on. If anyone has any suggestions let me know! Thanks!!!!

First thing I'd do is look for any signs of mites or lice.......You've gotta look way down next to the skin, especially in the vent area......If there's no parasites.....I would switch to pine shavings........Also, are they getting too crowded since they're bigger.....They may be plucking themselves....Or maybe one is plucking the others.......Sometimes a chicken will pluck it's own feathers out if it needs more protein in it's diet. (Feathers are made up mainly of protein.) Are you feeding them a good chick grower? They should have that until they are appx 17 weeks old.

That's about all I can think of.....Hope everything works out for you,

Sharon

Thank you so much!! We made a bigger pen for them to stay in hopefully that will fix it. They are way bigger than the lil Road Islands.
