Hello all,

I thought my 2 yr old barred rock may be egg bound but i couldn't feel any egg up inside her...we gave her a warm epson salt soak yesterday and kept her separate from the rest of my girls for the rest of the day and last night. This morning she had excreted something long but I have no idea what is was and she ate some scrambled egg with a tums in it. Well she ate some it. I had noticed her walking a little funny over the past few days and some feathers around her vent are missing and it looks red. when I picked her up I noticed she felt like her bottom was swollen and it was warm...thats when we soaked her but nothing happened. Today we just noticed yellow looking stuff oozing out of her vent looks like she has an infection. Just to let you know she is walking around and I just saw her take a big drink of water and shes pecking at the ground. Can I give her some antibiotics somehow? Thank you for any help you can give me. Our nests are pine shavings and none of my other girls are acting sick at all....I do not know the last time this hen has laid an egg....He comb is still pretty red though.....

Sounds lot like EYP.

Pics of this “long thing”? I’m thinking it’s a part of a soft shelled egg which broke, but there’s only one way to know.

I had a hen survive EYP this summer, there is hope.

Your best bet would be finding an avian vet who can give you what she will need.

It sounds like she is experiencing a broken egg or a shell-less egg membrane. Did you get it all out of her vent? I would try to get some Fish Mox amoxicillin from either Tractor Supply or online. Dosage is 125-250 mg given orally twice a day. I would not say that she has egg yolk peritonitis at this stage, but broken eggs can lead to bacteria entering the reproductive tract.

Interesting...that could be the case...last night we cleaned her bottom up again and she is still drinking and eating and very bright eyed so I may check into this today thanks so much for your wisdom Eggcessive!

Thank you everyone for your replies this is what was in the pen this morning it looks something like a soft shell also I can see she has pooped even though I'm not sure what that means but it is good right? And it looks pretty normal. I also gave her some Fish Mox I'm not sure how much actually prevailed as she was adamant about no more of that dropper coming close to her .
