2 year old hens worth it?

If they never showed symptoms, how are you sure they were carriers? Just because they were the new ones?

Long story short, the breeder told me she knew they were carriers (the parents were carriers and it passes to through the eggs) and kept breeding them then selling because, in her word, it's not a big deal.

That’s kind of sad. I guess to me chickens are almost the same as dogs, but others see them more as livestock. (Which they technically are, it’s just I love them so much)

I love my girls. I chose to treat them instead of culling and starting over. But because I'm choosing to keep them I have to close my flock. No chickens in or out until all of these ones are gone. I also no longer free range them because I dont want to chance a wild bird coming in contact with one and passing it to another flock. They have a big enough run though. Just lost some of the joys of having chickens because of the breeder.

I think you should get them as eggs or chicks. They're not as much work as you think, and it's so much more fun to hatch and raise your own. All of mine think I'm their mother hen, and they trust me a lot. Also, if you raise your own, when they start laying, they'll have a good few years before stopping. Two yr olds may stop laying eggs sooner.

I’m a first timer for getting hens. I’m wondering if it’s worth getting 2 year old hens? Will they still be producing many eggs or will they be close to slowing down?

I've reported her but she sold more than 500 chicks who were carriers before I even knew. And did not tell anyone. The only reason she told me is because I was supposed to get more chicks from her but told her my girls somehow got sick and I dont want to infect new birds. She told me hers were already carriers so it's fine. I still did not buy anymore because shes scum.

If your talking to me, it’s a huge deal. It’s just awful. But some people don’t see chickens the way I do. I mean, in factories they cage them up and cut off their beaks.

This site is a great way to meet local people in your area who keep chickens.

There are lots of reasons to keep chickens, which others have mentioned. I know that raising chicks is not something new keepers think they can do! As someone else mentioned, when you order from a hatchery there is a minimum number to keep the chicks warm and comfortable in the shipping box. I order what I want and then extra sex-link pullets to fill the box. If you get in touch with your chicken keeping neighbors, you can have some input on those extra box-filling chicks! Let the experienced chick raiser help you, they love it! I raised some until they were 5 weeks old and ready to go outdoors for my friends who only wanted 4 to get a start on a flock last spring. Out of a box of 25, I only kept 7. The rest went to my friend and a neighbor. Good luck with your new flock!

The breeder breeds and sells them for a living. I understand that part. I dont understand knowingly selling infected chicks though.

Im talking about the person who willingly sells sick animals and says it's no big deal. When you potentially kill peoples pets because of your greed / ignorance or whatever then it IS a big deal and if someone ever did something like that killed off my Too, well, Id probably end up in jail over it.

Even if it really was no big deal, still, that kind of $#^t needs to be told to the potential new owners UP FRONT, so they know what they are getting into, and can potentially inoculate their existing birds, quarantine the new ones longer or whatever it takes to prevent passing a sickness on.
